Most moviegoers will recognize Brittany Murphy as Alicia Silverstone's protegee in the hit '90s teen comedy classic, Clueless. Though her role as Tai offered her a memorable comic opportunity, Murphy has been seen in several other prestigious productions as of late. In addition, her upcoming projects boast supporting roles in several major films as well as a leading role as a rock legend.

Following her turn in Clueless, Murphy acted in several small films before landing in the acclaimed television movie David and Lisa opposite Lukas Haas. The film, a remake of a 1962 movie, told the story of two mentally disturbed teenagers who meet and fall in love in an institution. Murphy delivered a strong performance that earned acclaim from many critics. That same year, Murphy also appeared on Broadway with Anthony LaPaglia in the Tony Award-winning revival of A View from the Bridge.

All of these roles have been grooming Murphy for her introduction as a major player on the silver screen. Starting with her supporting role in the beauty pageant comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous, Murphy will then return to the world of mental institutions for her next role in Girl, Interrupted with Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. But the role that will truly announce her arrival will be that of legendary '60s rock star Janis Joplin. The part, originally intended for Melissa Etheridge, went to Murphy after the film's casting director saw her sing at a wedding. The film won't open until next year, but by then, it will only cement what has already been decided, that Brittany Murphy is an important new actress to watch.

Next up for Brittany Murphy -- Murphy will next be seen opposite Denise Richards and Kirsten Dunst in Drop Dead Gorgeous. Later this year, she stars with Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted, in which she will play a laxative-obsessed neurotic. Next year, she will be seen in Cherry Falls a teen slasher film in which all the killer is out to kill all the virgins of one town. And finally, Murphy stars in Piece of My Heart, the upcoming biopic of Janis Joplin.
