[Parts relating to Brittany are bolded]
A white rapper in Detroit battles poverty, prejudice, and his own explosive anger while trying to make it in
the hip-hop industry. Sound familiar? It should.
Oh, by the way, this rapper's name isn't Marshall -it's "Jimmy," and he's the main character in the
movie Fight Music. Of course, Jimmy will be played by Eminem, and it's no coincidence that the
$50 million movie echoes his life story.
But we all remember what happened the last time a music superstar made the jump to the big screen by playing
someone a lot like themselves. That's right-Glitter happened.
How can Eminem manage to avoid Mariah's fate and make a movie that's more than an exercise in ego?
Making things as authentic as possible is a start.
Although his acting career has been limited to bit parts in movies like The Wash, Eminem's co-star
Brittany Murphy has no doubt Eminem will deliver a realistic performance.
"He's going to be quite an amazing actor," she says."I don't think that should come as too
much of a surprise. We've all seen how magnetic he is in his videos. He's better and more
honest than most actors I've ever worked with."
![]() Brittany also defends her III co-star from his many "critics. " I think he's very " misunderstood," she says. "He's a good person."
And what is Brittany's role? "I play Eminem's girl [Alex]," she says. "She's practical, not at all disturbed, very normal. She just wants to get out of Detroit." ( Some on-set snoops say Brittany and Eminem share an off-screen love interest, too!) Also in the cast are Eugene Byrd and Mekhi Phifer, who'll play Eminem's boys, Wink and Future. Taryn Manning is cast as his ex, and his mother will be played by Kim Basinger. Although People reported that Eminem's real mom, Debbie Mathers-Briggs, was furious with this and wanted to play the part herself, her attorney insists that she's "grateful" and wants to sit down with Kim and give her information for the role. She's not pissed? That's a change! What hasn't changed is Eminem's love of hip-hop. He and Dr. Dre will be creating the songs for the movie. So he hasn't quit his day job-he just added another one!
