Hype Brittany Murphy Look who's talking - Its the girl looking to break her rep as a freak-chick in this month's Riding in Cars with Boys.
by David Eimer
Need a twisted teen for your offbeat drama? Then check out Brittany Murphy's bizarre resume… After grabbing attention as dimwit Tai in Clueless, she's played a stalked virgin in slasher movie, Cherry Falls, a girl who keeps dead chickens under her bed in mental hospital drama Girl, Interrupted, and is back in the nit house for Michael Douglas psycho-thriller Don't Say a Word, this time as a catatonic. So her role as Fay, a teen mother who's best friends with Drew Barrymore in single-parent dramedy Riding in Cars with Boys, is surprisingly normal - though it's hardly a barrel of laughs. "This film is one giant contraceptive, "grins Murphy. "I think it should be shown in every school in the world." Despite her kooky screen image, the twenty-four year old actress is great fun in the flesh. She has a loud laugh, like to break into song and refuses to censor herself. Ask her about her own experiences of riding in cars with boys, and you get: "Well, I lost my virginity in a car. But it wasn't a very nice one…" And, although she's just been cast alongside Eminem in Curtis Hansom's untitled Slim Shady project, she claims not to be too excited by her current 'hot' status. "I don't think I'm flavour of the month, I don't see myself that way," she says dismissively. "I'm just doing my job."
