First Take : Cameo ![]()
THE PURE THING: The scene-stealer from Girl, Interrupted goes virginal in Cherry Falls Brittany Murphy is intrinsically endearing: She sings along to the blues with gusto at her photo shoot; she teaches an assistant to swing-dance between shots; and when you're sitting on the roof with a notebook, pen, and tape recorder in your lap, and a rush of wind blows the list of questions from your hands, she quickly chases it down, nailing it with her high-heeled boots. ![]() The 23-year-old actress, best known as Alicia Silverstone's makeover project in Clueless and the suicidal chicken-fanatic in Girl, Interrupted, gets the spotlight all to herself in the upcoming teen slasher-black comedy Cherry Falls. Murphy stars as a virginal high school student who's being hunted by a serial killer targeting not-yet-deflowered teens in the titular town. "A little bit of the characters always trickle into who you are," Murphy says. "She's 16, so I noticed a certain vulnerability that was there-and I'm a very oversensitive, vunerable person. You have to be to do this for a living." Although she has been sworn to secrecy about certain Cherry Falls scenes ("there was a lot of blood, screaming and naked bodies"), she's happy to talk about how lucky she was that her mother moved the two of them from New Jersey to L.A. nearly a decade ago to give Murphy a shot at stardom. "We're a real team, " says Murphy, who's making Mom proud with roles in next year's Sidewalks of New York, Summer Catch and Riding in Cars with Boys. Adds Murphy, "If I can be half the woman she is someday, I'd be happy. "
