Girl Can't Help It

CLUELESS STAR BRITTANY MURPHY IS POISED FOR NEXT-BIG-THINGDOM.
MEGAN QUITKINGETS THE LOWDOWN ON THE EDGY INGENUE.

It is early fall, and we are easting a late lunch at L'Ulivo, a small Italian restaurant in Soho. Brittany Murphy has just completed a photo shoot, during which a nervous publicist watched as the actress strutted her stuff to the Rolling Stones' "Time is on My Side."

It's on her side, all right. Best known as Tai, the hapless trend fiend in the film Clueless (you remember, the one who couldn't compete with Alicia Silverstone's glossy glamour), Brittany Murphy has been slowly building her public profile with turns in Girl, Interrupted and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Just when it seened that her career might be having (hear her as the voice of would-be beautician Luanna of Fox's King of the Hill sitcom) her resume's now got body, shine and instant length.

Dressed in a gauzy pink shirt, tall brown boots, and a red gucci motorcycle jacket, Brittany has messy blonde hair that has grown a remarkable five inches in the past few hours. "Feel these extensions," she instructs, impulsively pulling my hand toward her head. "This morning I hardly had any har and now I have tons of it." She also reveals tiny baby bangs, which are the result of a litle mishap with some Jolene cream bleach. "My hairline was liek Queen Elizabeth's for a while," she confesses. The actress is in town filming Penny Marshall's Riding in Cars with Boys, which features her and Drew Barrymore as 15-year-olds growing up in the projects. "We're best friends, and we both get pregnant two months apart from each other. We have to drop out of school because our, um, special circumstances."

In addition to Riding, Brittany has three other upcoming films. For starters, there's Ed Burns's upcoming Sidewalks of New York. She recently finished shooting the baseball movie Summer Catch with Freddie Prinze Jr. in which she plays the town tart. And this month she stars as a high school student in Jeffrey Writ's black comedy, Cherry Falls. "I was up until three in the morning reading the script," she says. "It was just so funny and outrageous. It's about a serial killer who starts murdering all the virgins in a small town. Some people lose their virginity so they wont get killed, but I stay a virgin," she says proudly. "At one point it had an NC-17 rating, but I think they've made it a little less racy."

A Jersey girl, Brittany lived in the Garden State until age 13. "It's always been my mom and me," she says with just a hint of accent. While her mother sold china crystal, and cookware, Brittany attended as many acting and dance classes as she could. The dup just bid adieu to their pink stucco place in Sherman Oaks and are in the process of moving into a new house in the Hollywood Hills. "I've kind of baged on the whole moving thing," she giggles, sounding a little guilty about leaving the packing to her mother, or "Mommy, " as she calls her when they speak mid-lunch via cell phone.

When our waitress brngs us our third round of peach iced teasm Brittany can't help herself. "Your cross is backwards," she says, adjusting the startled woman's necklace. "Make a wish. Go ahead," she says. "You can't waste wishes, for crying out loud!" Clearly, our Brittany is a fan of the spontaneous gesture.

Things seem to happen around her. When Brittany suggests we take a walk through SoHo, Anna Sui strides in from of us and the suddenly Steven Tyler appears from around a corner. The lizard-like Aerosmith frontman seems particularly dazzled. Just for Britt, he sings an X-rated version of "The 12 Days of Christmas." "On the first day of Christmas," he croons, "my true love gave to me, my very first case of VD." Anothe rgirl faced with this intrusion might slap him, but Brittany appears to be absolutely starstruck. She doesn't seem to mind the Aerosmith singer doesn't recognize her as she shouts Kudos in his direction.

Speaking of musical high-flyers, now seems like a good time to ask Brittany about that other young star who shares her name, if not its spelling. "This actually comes up a lot in interviews," she says when asked about Ms. Spears. "I'm a big fan of Britney's. I believe she's in it for the long hual."

That makes two of them.
