Finally...
A movie version of Rent may never see the light of a film projector, but it'll always have a fan in Brittany Murphy.

Murphy, who stars in a handful of movies this fall (Don't Say a Word, Riding in Cars with Boys, Sidewalks of New York), landed the saucy role of Mimi in the Miramax musical--for just one day. "For that one day, I was able to sing those songs; it was so much fun," she says, safe and sound from her home in New Jersey, where in the background I could hear fighter jets patrolling New York's skies.

"It would have been an extraordinary movie."

Murphy has experienced such heartbreak before, when the Janis Joplin biopic she was attached to went south. She's undaunted.

"No matter if I get to do it or not, I'll be there opening night," she says.
"I hope it's a movie that gets made by the people who are supposed to make it." I'll bet those people will be closely watching the box office of Chicago.
