![]() No one who saw 1999's Girl, Interrupted could easily forget Brittany Murphy's portrayal of the laxative-addicted daddy's girl who stored chicken carcasses beneath her bed. Murphy was equally memorable four years earlier when she played the frumpy nerd who got a Beverly Hills makeover from Alicia Silverstone in the hit Clueless. The actress's considerable range is about to be put on display once again in four projects. She plays a college student who has an affair with a married man in Ed Burns's ensemble romantic comedy The Sidewalks of New York, due out in the spring, and then she's a horny waitress with a hankering for future ball players in general-and Freddie Prinze Jr. in particular-in August's Summer Catch. Next the actress stars opposite Drew Barrymore in Penny Marshall's upcoming Riding in Cars with Boys, a film about two best friends who both get married and pregnant at 15, but who resolve to make their dreams come true anyway. Based on Beverly D'Onofrio's autobiographical novel, Riding left quite an impression on Murphy: "There's: a line of Drew's that keeps repeating in my head like a song," she says. "'One day can make your life, one day can ruin your life. All life is four or five days put together."'
Barrymore left quite an impression on the actress, too: Murphy is currently filming her next role as a homicidal patient tended by a shrink (Michael Douglas) in the upcoming thriller Don't Say a Word. Given the complicated characters she's woven into the tapestry of her already prolific career, what's her strategy for future Hollywood success? "I don't really have a game plan," she says. "I'm not a cerebral actor-I'm visceral. When I read a script, the character will come from the page, into my hand, into my arm, and then into my body. All of a sudden, I know I'm to be this person for three months. It's a fantastic feeling."
