Brittany Murphy

This time last year, Brittany Murphy was celebrating her 21st birthday--not at some hip Hollywood night spot, but in Lithuania, where she was shooting a movie. Her birthday gift was phone call informing her that she had landed a coveted role in the upcoming ensemble drama Girl, Interrupted. The film, sort of a female version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest, stars Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.

Next up, Murphy will take on her meatiest role to date, as the lead in a biopic based on the life of rock-and-roll legend Janis Joplin, "To say that I am just a fan would belittle my love for Janis," she says. The film won't begin shooting for some time, however. (Joplin's music rights are unavailable until 2000, she says). Murphy has been a face to watch since she literally fell onto screens as Alicia Silverstone's sidekick, Tai, in Clueless.

Since then she has worked non-stop--in television, film, and even on Broadway. During the rare moments when she isn't working, this self-professed Behind The Music junkie is setting up her new Los Angeles house. -AO
