Brittany Murphy by John Searles Brittany Murphy has been a hit in Hollywood since she and her mom packed up and moved to Los Angeles from New Jersey nearly 11 years ago. She did such a stellar job playing the creepy chick in Girl, Interrupted that the 24-year-old went on to land several other offbeat parts. Her roles as a wacky waitress in Ed Burns' latest romantic comedy Sidewalks of New York, as Michael Douglas's deranged mental patient in the psychological thriller Don't Say a Word, and as Drew Barrymore's oddball best friend in Riding in Cars with Boys all make one thing clear: This ballsy babe is the reigning queen of quirky characters. What's the wildest thing you ever did to get a part? It was when I sang at my friend's wedding. Little did I know that the head of Paramount casting was there. [After the wedding], she asked me to read for the role of Janice Joplin in a new movie. I got the part but the movie fell through. Who are your pals in Hollywood? I became very dear friends with Winona Ryder while filming Girl, Interrupted. She's given me advice on everything from relationships to career choices. She's a love, a real sparkle bunny. Tell us about your first kissing scene. It was with Reese Witherspoon in a movie called Freeway. I played a wacko girl who shares a prison cell with Reese's character. She says something like "I'll make out with you, but I won't do anything else because I don't do that with girls." And then I maul her like a needy little dog.
